Linux administration from the first shell prompt to a running server - the command line, users and permissions, storage, services, networking and shell scripts - on Linux servers of your own in the lab. You leave able to build a Linux server, maintain it and troubleshoot it, with the material of the LPIC-1 and CompTIA Linux+ exams covered.

What you will be able to do
- Build a Linux server from installation to a running service - partitions, LVM and file systems, packages and updates
- Manage users, groups and permissions, and set up sudo and key-based SSH access
- Run services under systemd, schedule jobs with cron and timers, and read logs with journalctl
- Configure networking, DNS and firewalld, and troubleshoot connectivity from the server outward
- Write Bash scripts that automate repeating work - backups, checks and reports
- Harden and monitor a server - SELinux, security updates, resource monitoring and logs

- Distributions, the kernel and the boot sequence - BIOS and UEFI, GRUB, systemd targets
- Installing a server, disk layout and first login
- Hardware, devices and kernel modules
- Targets, shutdown and reboot, and what runs at boot
- The shell, paths and the filesystem hierarchy
- File permissions, ownership and links
- Text processing with grep, sed, awk and sort; pipes and redirection
- Editing with vi
- Finding files and managing processes
- Package management with dnf and apt, repositories and Flatpak
- Partitions, LVM, file systems (ext4, XFS), mounting and fstab
- Swap, quotas and disk usage
- Archiving and backup with tar and rsync
- Users, groups, passwords and sudo
- SSH: keys, hardening sshd, tunnels
- firewalld and zones
- SELinux modes, contexts and booleans
- systemd units - enabling, starting and troubleshooting services
- cron, at and systemd timers
- journald, rsyslog and log rotation
- Time synchronisation with chrony
- IP configuration with NetworkManager and nmcli - static and DHCP
- Name resolution: DNS, /etc/hosts and the hostname
- Troubleshooting with ip, ss, ping, traceroute and tcpdump

Basic familiarity with computers and networks; no previous Linux experience is needed.
The exam and the certification
The course follows the published objectives of LPIC-1 (exams 101-500 and 102-500, objectives version 5.0) and CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-006). LPIC-1 is two exams of 90 minutes and 60 questions each, and the certification is valid for 5 years; Linux+ is up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, in English, on CompTIA's three-year renewal cycle. Both are delivered by Pearson VUE at a test centre, and LPIC-1 also online through OnVUE. For a hands-on certification, Red Hat's RHCSA exam (EX200) on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 is the next step, and the course's lab exercises follow its format. The academy issues its own certificate of completion at the end of the course.

Preparation for LPIC-1 and CompTIA Linux+ (XK0-006)
CompTIA Linux+
XK0-006: up to 90 questions including performance-based items, 90 minutes, passing score 720 on a 100-900 scale; three-year renewal cycle. Through Pearson VUE.
LPIC-1
Two exams, 101-500 and 102-500, each 90 minutes with 60 questions; no prerequisites; valid five years. At a test centre or online with OnVUE.
Red Hat RHCSA
EX200: a hands-on practical exam on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. Red Hat certifications are current for three years.
The labs
Every participant works on Linux servers of their own in the academy's virtual lab - Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu machines installed from scratch, disks laid out with LVM, users, SSH, firewalld and SELinux configured, services run under systemd, and network faults the instructors plant on purpose to be found. The closing sessions are lab exercises in the RHCSA exam's format - a task, a clock, and a server to bring to the required state.
